3 Day Golden Bay & Hobbit Film Locations Itinerary
Are you a Hobbit fan? How about this three day itinerary which features several of the film locations featured in The Hobbit, as well as offering some time to explore and immerse yourself in the best of the Abel Tasman and Golden Bay.
One of the best ways to see two major film sites is by helicopter with Reid Helicopters. Visit Mt Olympus and the site South of Rivendell where the Fellowship hide from the crebain, Saruman's black crows in the Fellowship of the Ring. Fly south west for a double Rings flight and visit Mt Owen, Dimrill Dale as the Fellowship escapes from the Mines of Moria. The flights over the Kahurangi National Park will be a highlight of a trip around New Zealand.
Before leaving Nelson City, make sure you visit the One Ringmaker at Jens Hansen Jewellers.
Then drive one hour from Kaiteriteri over the Takaka Hill and arrive in Golden Bay.
Lord of the Rings and Hobbit fans can stop off at Caanan Downs at the top of Takaka Hill and visit Chetwood Forest from Lord of the Rings: An Unexpected Journey. Also filmed at Caanan Downs are the Anduin Grasslands and Beorn’s House from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
A highlight of this three day itinerary will be a trip with Farewell Spit Eco Tours out to the world-recognised bird sanctuary on Farewell Spit. A nature and bird-lovers delight.
Allocate a full day as trips are tide dependent.
Lord of The Ring and The Hobbit fans will enjoy visiting Salisbury Falls (Aorere River) where the scene of Tauriel & Legolas meet before heading into Lake-town in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
If you have time, drive out towards Wharariki beach and take a horse trek with Cape Farewell Horse Treks to ride to the scene filmed on Kaihoka Station where the company arrives at a destroyed farmhouse from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
